논문 초록

 : This study explores whether judges exhibit favoritism towards lawyers who are alumni of the same high schools. Exploiting a unique dataset that links court rulings with the personal backgrounds of judges and attorneys, this research reveals that judges are 9% more likely to rule in favor of parties represented by lawyers who not only share the same high school background but also attended the school simultaneously. By controlling for lawyer-specific fixed effects, I eliminate the potential that lawyers with shared school backgrounds are inherently more skilled. The high school tie effect is more pronounced in lower courts compared to the Supreme Court. However, the preferential treatment vanishes when the judge and lawyer did not attend the high school concurrently, indicating that the observed favoritism is confined to individuals within the same cohort or friendship network, rather than extending to broader benefit group categories typically noted in similar studies.
