논문 초록

 : Despite growing concerns about generative AI's (GenAI) impact on creative industries, empirical evidence remains limited. This paper studies the impacts of GenAI release on artists using panel data collected from a leading artwork sharing platform. We leverage the algorithmic features of GenAI (specifically Stable Diffusion) and institutional details to employ a difference-in-differences (DiD) framework. Our DiD estimates find that GenAI release has a significant negative effect on the number of artworks produced, which supports concerns that GenAI may discourage human artists. However, the remaining artworks show quality improvements, and some artists benefit from adopting the new tool. We additionally provide descriptive patterns, such as the entry of new artists who extensively use GenAI, and discuss implications for policymakers and platform managers.
